Thanksgiving – is good food and family all it’s about?

I find it very interesting to read the original documents of the founding fathers of the USA. They wrote some amazing documents which changed the face of the planet. The ideas of goverment where like a new light bulb in a time of darkness. They gave the world hope of peace from religous dictators and other oppresors. Which gave way for the massive influx of aliens seeking citizenship, a trend which still continues to this day.

Since today has been designated at the official ‘Thanksgiving’ day, I took the liberty to research some of the documents crafted by a few of those founding fathers. It amazed me to discover how they wrote about giving thanks to the “great Lord and Ruler of Nations”. This was a day set apart to literally give thanks and prayer to God.
George Washington in 1789 said the following:

“WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houfes of Congress have, by their joint committee, requefted me “to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to eftablifh a form of government for their safety and happiness:” Original proclaimation

“Then in 1863 Abraham Lincoln thundered, “We have been recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven … we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown, but we have forgotten God.” Lincoln restored the neglected presidential proclamations of prayer and thanksgiving during the tragic years of the Civil War. “Intoxicated with unbroken success,” he wrote, “we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and reserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.“” Excerpt taken from thanksgiving.org

I’ve always been welcomed to the Thanksgiving table. We discuss things we’re grateful for while eating the Turkey. It’s a great tradition, but have we fallen yet again into the classification of people which Abraham Lincoln spoke about?

Have we forgotten to give thanks to God? Have a happy Thanksgiving.

    Was George Washington short tongued?

    I quote:-

“Whereas both Houfes of Congress have, by their joint committee, requefted me “to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER”

    Houfes of Congress?

LOL – you are so funny Jim …

That is weird though that they spelt it that way. I wonder if this is one of those things which changed through the passage of time. Or maybe he really was short tongued !! Or the reporter couldn’t spell!!

Anyway it’s kind of funny to read now with a mental picture of someone saying it with a short tongue!
