Boycott Internet Explorer.

slashdot is running a story about a journalist who usually supports Windows products, yet for the new version of their Internet Explorer 7, he is suggesting people boycott the application. He goes on to say,

‘My advice here is simple: Boycott Internet Explorer. It is a cancer on the Web, and must be stopped. IE is insecure and is not standards-compliant, which makes it unworkable for both end users and Web content creators… You can turn the tide by demanding better from Microsoft and using a better alternative Web browser. I recommend and use Mozilla Firefox, but Apple Safari (Mac only) and Opera 8 are both worth considering as well.

I’ve been running Mozilla’s Firefox at my house for well over 6 months and I’m never looking back. I’ve gone one step further and totally removed Internet Explorer from all my system. Internet Explorer (IE) is NOT A WEB STANDARD BROWSER. It never was and it may never be. After all it’s not Microsoft’s Internet – but yours.

Partially agree. Although, find me a browser that is totally secure and supports all standards 100%. Currenty not a single browser on the market is standards compliant….

I agree – finding a browser that is 100% compatible is hard (especially as these standards are always changing as one browser pushed development of a particular standard.)
But let’s use a browser which is not pushing Microsoft’s intended standards. Since the term standards by itself is suggesting an open set of definitions for others to follow.

I agree Microsoft’s Internet Explorer should be boycotted — as such so should their MSN Internet browsing software that used to be called MSN Explorer when version 7 was the latest version of their browsing software.

Free Press.Net is participating in activities to Save The Internet from being controlled by cable and phone companies. A website has even been set up called SaveTheInternet.com which is trying to make a difference. I use other web browsers — I know MS used to make IE for Mac but discontinued — even then I would have used a better browser. I use Mozilla Firefox and Apple’s Safari that is now Mac and Windows compatible since Apple has released Safari 3 beta. Safari 3 is even on Apple’s iPhone for mobile or hand held based web browsing.

When released in final form it should work great. It would also be nice to see a Google GBrowser. MS tried to monopolize the market for web browsers a few years ago and almost succeeded — well they did at the time by bundling IE with Windows to kill Netscape and then got Apple to even bundle Mac IE with the Mac OS to generate more interest even on the Mac for IE and also set up a barrier on both sides against Netscape.

Netscape had problems of its own not caused by IE but the actions of Microsoft were so cruel it destroyed Netscape’s then existing browser business. Netscape is now back in browser business but has nowhere near the market share it used to have; the most important browsers today are Firefox, IE and possibly Apple Safari. The Netscape browser of today has minority market share along with browsers like Opera and Camino.

If I had to choose between a browser like MSN Internet software or AOL browser I would choose AOL browser (for the type of browser that requires sign-in).

For the past 5 years, I have used both IE and Firefox, and have to say that Firefox is by far the best browser. However, as a web developer, I use IE because 85% or more of Internet users use IE and I must make sure my designs and applications work in both IE and Firefox. If anything, I just wish that browser updates wouldn’t cause site designs to crash ever few months!

Oh yeah. This ball needs to start rolling. I dream of the days Internet Explorer is history. Every day it amazes may how this piece of genuine crap can still exist! Microsoft has shown they don’t give a ####, their time is up already! We need to respond. They will never come up with a decent browser.
